About
The Atom Project was a assignment in Chemistry where we had to pick an element from the periodic table and create a model of the atoms makeup. The element that I was given was Phosphorous; when building this project we had to use objects to make the protons, neutrons, and electrons. I used earplugs for the electrons and colored cotton balls for the protons and neutrons.

Pros and Cons |
The Atom Project used self direction skills during the building process of the project. throughout the whole project we had to manage our own time constraints and use our time wisely to be able to finish the project. Because of how large and vast the project had the potential to be we had to plan a lot ourselves. Be it what we were going to use as materials or where to get our supplies, we had to make all of these decision ourselves.
I was able to develop my Self Direction skills for this project through further using them. The best way to perfect something is to put it in practice so having to monitor our own projects ended up being useful as it brought out our creativity and independence.

I am most proud of how resourceful I was for this project. For the whole assignment I did not spend any money on my supplies by using trash and scraps to create what I needed. By doing this I was not only reusing but also saving money. Not only that but I had some hurdles to face which I was able to get around; For Example: while doing the project my seven year old glue gun finally bit the dust and I had to end up getting another classmate to bring their to school so I could use it.
The most difficult part of the project was the assembly. due to some of my tools breaking this assignment really was a hassle and definitely made me have some more gray hairs added to my head. Another difficult part of the assembly was trying to cut out circles in cardboard. I used cardboard for the rings and trying to get them even was hands down one of the most difficult things I have done to date.

What Could be Better |
Past and Future Learning |
To better this project I would spend more time on the project and get better materials. As much as it was a cool idea to use recycled materials for the whole project it also was a hassle and would have been easier if I had just spent the money that others did and created it like that. Also the model did not turn out exactly the way I want it so I would spend more time making it look sleeker and more professional.

This projects relates to what we have been learning in Ms. S's class for the entire year, which is Chemistry. everything about this project related to what we had learned about the periodic table in the past with many different teachers as well as related very well and was able to build upon all of the knowledge that Ms. S has taught us all year.
I could apply my knowledge that I have for the element phosphorous if I ever end up needing to use the element to create a compound. Many compounds use elements so its important to know how to read the periodic table which this project has helped me understand better.
